Episode 5: The Importance of Perspective

Everything is constantly changing, and change brings about growth. But right now, with a pandemic, the death of George Floyd, and Minneapolis riots, it can be very hard to remember that change and growth are a good thing. In June, something I’ve struggled with is finding my own voice. I’ve grown so accustomed to my own family’s beliefs and views that I haven’t found a big need to dig into others perspectives. But especially now it is so important to learn about our culture and what’s in the news from different sources, as to get the most knowledge to form your own opinions. I want to remember that my opinion matters, everyone’s does. A lot of what we read and learn about are people’s opinions. I want to learn about our culture and about the things that are happening from more than one source.

I also want to challenge myself to read the opposing side of my opinion. If I go into a conversation thinking only I’m right, what good does that do for me? I don’t learn anything! As Jordan Peterson says so well, “It actually matters if you’re wrong. Being wrong in some way is like having a map that doesn’t correspond with the streets in real life.” I want to find my own voice and learn how I’m wrong so I can grow. Thinking about this, I think of the importance of all peoples opinions, because one person’s opinion ripples onto others. Getting deeper into the summer I want to think about my opinion on topics and what I can do to make our community better because there are lots of ways to right now. My family and I have been using time on Friday’s or Saturday’s to do some sort of service work around the Twin Cities. If you want suggestions on places to give/sort food or even good restaurants to support in places around Minneapolis reach out via my email in the contact page 🙂

Perspectives are constantly changing and growing, so in order to grow and make our community better we need to find our own perspective. This gives us purpose and a challenge!
